Rescue Effort and Capture
As of Tuesday, one zebra is still at large, while three have been recaptured after a unique rescue effort involving state police and two rodeo professionals passing by the scene.
Trooper Rick Johnson shared, “This is a first for me and all troopers involved. Four zebras that were being transported got loose when the driver stopped to secure the trailer on EB 90 to exit 32.”
Owner’s Account of the Escape
According to a report by USA Today, the owner Kristine Keltgen was driving the zebras from Winlock, Washington to Anaconda, Montana when the incident occurred. The zebras rushed out onto the highway when Keltgen opened the trailer door to adjust a flapping floor mat.
Community Response
Local residents and authorities came together to corral the zebras, with one zebra captured entering a backyard. The King County Sheriff’s Office was involved in the efforts to capture the escaped animals.
One Zebra Still Missing
Regional Animal Services of King County issued a statement urging residents to be on the lookout for the fourth zebra still on the loose in the North Bend area.
