Charmaine’s Journey to Recovery
A woman who was covered in thousands of tumours across her face and body has finally been able to see her face again after life-changing surgery. Charmaine shared her story on TLC programme Take My Tumour, where she revealed her NF-1 neurofibromatosis diagnosis, a genetic condition that causes tumours to grow along nerves.
Charmaine’s Struggle
The 43-year-old was covered in tumours all over her body, including her lips, ears, nose, arms, and legs, which hindered her ability to walk and even posed a risk to her breathing. After undergoing 60 hours of surgery, Charmaine expressed her newfound confidence, stating, ‘I really do feel beautiful now.’
The Life-Changing Surgery
Charmaine traveled from Trinidad to LA for the operation, which involved removing dozens of tumours, including a large one on her leg that affected her balance. Over a span of 10 weeks, she underwent 24 surgeries totaling 60 hours, resulting in a remarkable transformation.
Charmaine’s Transformation
Following the surgery, Charmaine was overjoyed to see her face clearly for the first time. She expressed her happiness, saying, ‘Life is 100 percent better for me. I love the way that I look now. I feel beautiful. I really do feel beautiful now.’
Understanding NF-1 Neurofibromatosis
NF1 is a genetic condition that manifests gradually over time, causing non-cancerous tumours to develop along nerves. While there is no cure for NF1, treatments such as surgery, medication, and therapy can help manage symptoms.
