Wisconsin Governor Vetoes Bill Prohibiting Transgender Athletes in Schools

Wisconsin Governor Vetoes Bill Banning Transgender Athletes

Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers vetoed a bill that aimed to ban high school transgender athletes from competing on teams aligning with their gender identity.

Reaffirming Commitment

In his veto message, Evers reiterated his commitment to opposing legislation that diminishes the safety and inclusivity of LGBTQ individuals and children.

Evers expressed concerns that such laws could negatively impact the mental health of LGBTQ Wisconsinites, increase anti-LGBTQ harassment, bullying, and violence, and jeopardize the well-being of LGBTQ individuals, particularly youth.

Republican Response

Despite Evers’ veto, the Republican-controlled Legislature in Wisconsin had passed the bill. However, they lack the votes to override the Governor’s decision.

Republican Representative Barb Dittrich criticized the veto, calling it “disgusting” and accusing Evers of holding a “misogynistic and hateful position towards actual females.”

Proposed Restrictions

The bill aimed to limit high school athletes to teams based on their assigned gender at birth. Supporters argued for fairness, while opponents viewed it as discriminatory and harmful to transgender youth.

It is noteworthy that the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association already requires transgender athletes to undergo hormone therapy before participating in sports, following NCAA guidelines.

National Landscape

Over 20 states in the US have enacted bans on transgender athletes participating in K-12 and collegiate sports. The Biden administration is working on a proposal to counter these bans, citing violations of Title IX.
