Wales and Poland fans warned against bringing pyrotechnic devices to play-off final

Warning Issued to Wales and Poland Fans Ahead of Euro 2024 Play-Off Final

Both Wales and Poland fans have been cautioned against bringing pyrotechnic devices to the upcoming Euro 2024 play-off final at Cardiff City Stadium. This warning comes in light of past incidents involving such devices at football matches.

Previous Incidents

  • Seven Poland fans were arrested after a Nations League game in Cardiff 18 months ago, with four individuals found in possession of pyrotechnics.
  • A Europa Conference League match between Aston Villa and Legia Warsaw witnessed crowd trouble, leading to 46 Polish fans being charged after clashes with the police.
  • The Football Association of Wales faced a fine of over £14,500 by FIFA for fans setting off flares during the 2022 World Cup play-off victories over Austria and Ukraine in Cardiff.

Police Measures and Consequences

Superintendent Steve Rees emphasized the strict stance against pyrotechnics, stating that it is a criminal offense to possess or attempt to bring such devices into a football stadium. Offenders risk arrest and a Football Banning Order.

Collaboration with Cardiff City Stadium staff is crucial to ensure compliance with stadium regulations. Attendees are urged to follow the supporter advice provided by the Football Association of Wales.

Security Concerns Addressed

FAW chief executive Noel Mooney responded to security concerns raised by fans following Poland’s previous visit to Cardiff. Mooney highlighted the importance of communication to enhance the overall fan experience.

Approximately 1,900 Poland fans are expected among the sell-out crowd of 33,000 for the play-off final, with the victors earning a spot in Euro 2024 alongside Austria, France, and the Netherlands.
