US Teen Survives Bear Attack Thanks to Brother’s Heroic Rescue

Black Bear Attack on Teenager in Arizona Bunkhouse

Black bears, although not known for being the most aggressive species, have been involved in attacks on humans in the past. Recently, a 15-year-old boy named Brigham Hawkins in Arizona had a terrifying encounter with a black bear in a bunkhouse, where he was eventually rescued by his brother.

Details of the Attack

  • The attack took place on Thursday, May 23, as reported by the Arizona Fish & Game Department.
  • Brigham was watching TV in the family’s bunkhouse when the bear entered and swatted at him, scratching his face.

Brave Rescue Effort

Brigham’s 18-year-old brother, Parker, rushed to the bunkhouse upon hearing the commotion. Despite Brigham’s rare genetic disorder, his siblings are accustomed to caring for him. Parker, mistaking the bear for a large dog, distracted it while their father helped Brigham escape.

Aftermath and Bear Capture

Brigham sustained cuts on his arms and face and is currently undergoing medical treatment. The authorities later captured and euthanized the bear to prevent further incidents.

Warning about Black Bears

While black bears are less likely to attack humans compared to other bear species, such as brown bears and polar bears, officials emphasize that these attacks can still occur. A recent fatal mauling in Tucson serves as a reminder of the potential danger posed by black bears.
