Gurpatwant Singh Pannun Murder Plot
Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, designated as a terrorist by New Delhi for advocating separatism and holding referendums overseas to carve out Khalistan, an independent Sikh state, has been at the center of a recent murder plot.
US-India Collaboration
The Joe Biden administration in the United States has acknowledged the seriousness of the situation and is collaborating with India to address the alleged murder plot against Pannun. During a Congressional hearing, US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Donald Lu emphasized the need for accountability in this matter.
Indian National Charged
An Indian national, Nikhil Gupta, currently in custody, has been charged with the murder-for-hire of Pannun. The US Justice Department revealed that Gupta was recruited by an Indian government employee to hire a hitman for the assassination, which was thwarted by Washington.
Rogue Officials Involved
An Indian investigation uncovered rogue officials, not authorized by New Delhi, who were involved in the murder plot. Reports indicate that at least one individual directly linked to the plot was previously employed by the Indian government but is no longer associated with India’s foreign spy agency.
New Delhi has shared the findings of its investigation with American authorities, shedding light on the complexities of the situation.
