US Military Temporarily Removes Gaza Aid Pier for Repairs Due to Structural Damage

Gaza Aid Pier Structural Damage: US Military Takes Action

The recent structural damage to the Gaza aid pier has prompted the US military to take immediate action. The necessity for repairs arose after rough seas on May 25 caused significant issues, including vessels running aground and part of the pier detaching from its anchored position due to harsh sea conditions and a North African weather system.

Pentagon Statement and Repair Process

According to a statement by the Pentagon on Tuesday, the US military is temporarily removing the humanitarian aid pier off Gaza’s coast for repairs. Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh announced that the pier will be towed back to the Israeli coastal city of Ashdod for repairs within the next 48 hours. The repair timeline is estimated to be approximately one week, as outlined by Centcom.

Joint Logistics Over-the-Shore (JLOTS) Operation

The floating pier, part of the JLOTS operation, was initiated after President Joe Biden’s directive for a temporary humanitarian aid mission. Operational since May 17, the pier has played a crucial role in delivering aid to the people of Gaza, with over 1,000 metric tonnes of aid already provided.

Future Plans and Aid Delivery

Once the repairs are completed, the intention is to re-anchor the temporary pier to the coast of Gaza and resume humanitarian aid deliveries. Despite the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, Washington remains committed to providing aid without deploying American troops on the ground in Gaza.

In conclusion, the efforts to assist those in dire humanitarian situations continue, with a focus on delivering aid by all possible means to those who need it most.
