US Imposes Sanctions on Russian Circumvention Through Chinese Companies

US Imposes Sanctions on Entities in Response to Ukraine Conflict

The US Treasury Department and the State Department have recently imposed sanctions on several entities, with a significant focus on Chinese companies, in response to the conflict in Ukraine.

Sanctions Against Chinese Companies

The US has targeted close to 200 entities, with over 80 designations specifically aimed at Chinese companies, as part of efforts to counter Moscow’s attempts to evade Western sanctions, including those facilitated through China.

  • Sanctions include 20 companies based in China and Hong Kong.
  • Washington has issued warnings regarding China’s alleged support for Russia’s military endeavors.
  • China has strongly opposed what it calls “illegal unilateral sanctions” by the US.

Challenges in US-China Relations

The alignment between China and Russia on this matter poses a significant challenge to the recent improvement in relations between the two economic powerhouses.

Impact of Sanctions

The sanctions aim to penalize entities involved in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and those supporting Russia’s procurement of crucial technology and equipment from abroad.

  • Nearly 60 entities across various countries, including China, Russia, Turkey, and others, were targeted.
  • The actions include restrictions on entities facilitating Russia’s acquisition of essential technology and equipment.
  • The State Department’s sanctions targeted China-based companies for their support to Russia’s defence industrial base.

Expansion of Sanctions

In addition to addressing Russia’s military endeavors, the US has expanded its sanctions to impede Russia’s energy exports, particularly liquefied natural gas (LNG).

  • Vessel operators involved in transporting equipment for Russia’s Arctic LNG 2 project were designated by the State Department.
  • The sanctions also encompassed entities affiliated with Russia’s nuclear and coal industries.

Pressure on Russia

These measures are part of a strategy to pressure Russia economically and diplomatically in response to its actions in Ukraine.

  • The US Commerce Department targeted Russian airlines by adding hundreds of Boeing and Airbus airplanes to an export control list.
  • The State Department’s actions extended to individuals linked to the controversial death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.
