US Government Urges States to Take Action Against Cyber Threats to Water Systems

Recent Cybersecurity Concerns in US Water Sector

In recent developments, concerns have been raised regarding cybersecurity threats targeting water and sewage systems in the United States.

Warning to State Governors

The US government issued a warning on March 19 to state governors about a series of disruptive cyberattacks aimed at water and sewage systems nationwide.

Call for Action

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Michael Regan and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan have initiated efforts to address these threats. They have invited state environmental, health, and homeland security Secretaries to a meeting to discuss safeguarding critical water sector infrastructure against cyber threats.

Upcoming Meeting

On March 21, a gathering will take place to highlight federal and state initiatives focusing on enhancing cybersecurity measures within the water sector. The meeting will also identify areas needing improvement and stress the importance of immediate action by states and water systems.

Importance of Cybersecurity

EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan emphasized the significance of cybersecurity practices in protecting drinking water and wastewater systems from potential cyberattacks. The EPA and NSC are committed to collaborating with state leaders to address the risks posed by cyber threats.

Identified Threat Actors

Alleged Iranian and Chinese cyber attackers have been identified as responsible for these attacks. Specific mention was made of a case involving Iranian hackers disabling a water facility controller in Pennsylvania, as well as the Chinese hacking group “Volt Typhoon” compromising critical IT infrastructure, including drinking water facilities in the US.

National Security Approach

National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan highlighted the Biden Administration’s focus on cybersecurity as a critical component of national security. Efforts have been made to implement cybersecurity standards in critical infrastructure, including the water sector, to mitigate risks and costs associated with cyber threats.

Concerns for Clean Water Supply

The potential disruption of clean and safe drinking water supply due to cyberattacks was underscored in the letter, emphasizing the significant impact on affected communities.
