Lucy Letby Case: Former Nurse Seeks Appeal Against Conviction
Background
Lucy Letby, a former neonatal nurse, is currently serving 14 whole life prison terms at HMP Bronzefield prison in Surrey for the murder of seven babies between 2015 and 2016 at the Countess of Chester Hospital. She was found guilty by the Manchester crown court after a 10-month-long trial.
Details of the Case
Letby is convicted of murdering five baby boys and two baby girls by injecting some of them with insulin and others with air or force-fed milk.
Appeal Process
Letby has renewed her attempts to appeal against the conviction. Initially denied permission by a single judge, she is now seeking a second stage appeal before a panel of judges at the Court of Appeals in London.
Current Status
Letby appeared before Judges Dame Victoria Sharp, Lord Justice Holroyde, and Lady Justice Lambert via a video link from the prison to contest the denial of appeal on four grounds. She is also due to be re-tried on one charge of attempted murder in June.
Media is not permitted to report the full details of the appeal hearing at this stage to avoid any prejudice among the jury.
