Two Cyber Attacks Linked to Chinese State Affiliated Actors Confirmed by Government

Deputy Prime Minister Criticizes Chinese Cyber Attacks on UK Institutions

Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden has condemned cyber attacks by China-state affiliated actors targeting UK institutions. He revealed that two separate cyber campaigns aimed at democratic institutions and parliamentarians were orchestrated by Beijing.

Protecting Democratic Values

Dowden emphasized the importance of safeguarding Britain’s democratic system and values, stating that it is a top priority for the UK Government. He highlighted the need to raise awareness about the targeting of politicians and democratic processes worldwide by state-sponsored cyber operations.

Government’s Response

The UK Government, in collaboration with the Five Eyes partnership, is determined to hold China and other state actors accountable for their actions. Swift and robust actions will be taken to protect the UK’s interests against any threats posed by the Chinese government.

NCSC Findings

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) identified high probability instances of Chinese state-affiliated actors targeting the Electoral Commission and a group of MPs. While these attacks did not impact the electoral processes, the government remains vigilant.

Sanctions and Solidarity

In response to the cyber activities, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) imposed sanctions on individuals and entities involved in the operations. Partners across regions are expected to show solidarity with the UK in combatting malicious cyber activities.

Challenges and Calls for Action

Political figures have called for a stronger stance against China’s cyber threats, emphasizing the need for international cooperation to address these challenges. The UK’s economic ties with China have raised concerns over intellectual property and security issues.

Looking Ahead

There is a growing consensus among MPs and officials that political relations with China need to be reevaluated to ensure the protection of democratic institutions and values. The government is urged to stay ahead of evolving cyber threats and take proactive measures to safeguard national interests.
