Tragedy Strikes as Makeshift Ferry Sinks Off Mozambique Coast
More than 90 people tragically lost their lives after an overcrowded makeshift ferry sank off the north coast of Mozambique. The ferry, a converted fish boat, was carrying approximately 130 passengers and encountered trouble while attempting to reach an island off Nampula province.
Details of the Incident
The ferry was en route to the Island of Mozambique when the tragic event unfolded. Nampula’s Secretary of State, Jaime Neto, explained that the boat’s overcrowded and unsuitable conditions led to its sinking, resulting in the loss of 91 lives, including many children.
Panic and Disinformation
According to Neto, a sense of panic among passengers was fueled by misinformation about cholera, prompting many to seek refuge on the island. Rescuers managed to save five individuals, with efforts ongoing to locate more survivors amidst challenging sea conditions.
Investigation and Response
An investigative team is actively working to determine the factors that led to the disaster. Of the survivors, two are currently receiving medical treatment in a hospital, highlighting the severity of the situation. Mozambique has been grappling with a cholera outbreak, with Nampula being the hardest-hit region.
The province has also seen an influx of individuals fleeing from neighboring Cabo Delgado due to escalating jihadist attacks, further complicating the humanitarian situation.
