Tragedy in Papua New Guinea: 4 Dead, 300+ Trapped in Landslide as Rescue Efforts Intensify

Papua New Guinea Landslide: Tragedy Strikes Kaokalam Village

On Friday, May 24, a devastating landslide hit Kaokalam village in Enga Province, located approximately 600 kilometers northwest of the capital city of Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea.

Impact of the Landslide

Reports indicate that at least four individuals lost their lives, with over 300 others trapped under the debris following the massive landslide. The incident has left the remote village in a state of devastation, with 1,182 houses buried under the rubble.

Search and Rescue Efforts

Efforts are underway to locate and rescue those trapped beneath the debris. Emergency teams have recovered four bodies so far, but the death toll is expected to rise as search operations continue.

Community leader Mark Ipuia mentioned, “At this time, we are still searching for bodies who are buried by the massive landslide. There are a lot of houses under the debris that cannot be reached.”

United Nations official Serhan Aktoprak highlighted the challenges faced by rescue teams, stating, “The land continues to slide and move, making it dangerous for people to operate.”

Government Response and Assistance

Prime Minister James Marape confirmed that disaster officials, the Defence Force, and the Department of Works and Highways are collaborating to provide relief and support in the affected area.

Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) reported that more than six villages have been impacted by the landslide. The Australian High Commission in Port Moresby is working closely with PNG authorities to assess the extent of the damage and casualties.

Aftermath and Recovery

The landslide has blocked highway access, necessitating the use of helicopters to reach the affected site. Aid agencies have noted the extensive destruction caused by the catastrophe, including the loss of livestock, food gardens, and clean water sources in the village.

Images from the scene depict the significant impact of the landslide on Mount Mungalo, with local residents engaging in rescue efforts using basic tools to search for survivors amidst the debris.

Our thoughts are with the victims and their families during this challenging time.
