Overview of Trade Relations
Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has highlighted the ongoing suspension of trade relations between Islamabad and New Delhi since 2019. This suspension was initiated by India, which imposed a 200% tariff on imports from Pakistan and halted various trade activities.
Background of the Situation
In a written statement to the National Assembly of Pakistan, Dar addressed the repercussions of the Pulwama attack, which led to India’s actions of increasing import duties, stopping the Kashmir bus service, and suspending trade across the Line of Control.
Response to Trade Issues
When questioned about the possibility of restoring trade relations with India, Dar mentioned that while Pakistan’s business community is eager for reestablishment, there are currently no plans in place due to the existing strained relations.
Pakistan’s Stance
Dar reiterated Pakistan’s stance on seeking engagement and dialogue to address key issues, particularly regarding Jammu and Kashmir. He emphasized the importance of creating a conducive environment for peace and reconciliation.
India’s Perspective
On the other hand, India has expressed its desire for peaceful relations with Pakistan, contingent upon Pakistan ceasing activities that promote hostility and terrorism. The historical tensions between the two countries largely revolve around the Kashmir conflict and mutual accusations of terrorism.
