Pet Shop Boys: Embracing Queerness in Their Latest Album
Pet Shop Boys, the iconic duo consisting of vocalist Neil Tennant and keyboardist Chris Lowe, have been a fundamental part of the music scene since the 1980s. Their upcoming 15th album, Nonetheless, is a departure from their previous works, as they proudly label it as their ‘queer album’.
A Legacy of Success

- They have won three Brit Awards and received six Grammy nominations.
- Since 1984, they have achieved 42 top 30 singles in the UK, including four number ones.
Neil Tennant, who came out as gay in 1994, expressed that this album overtly celebrates the queerness that has always been subtly present in their music. The track “Love Is The Law” draws inspiration from Oscar Wilde’s experiences in France, post his release from prison, delving into the underground gay culture of that time.
Another track, “A New Bohemia,” takes inspiration from the 1970s queer conceptual art troupe Les Petitis Bon-Bons. The album also features references like a glory hole in the video for “Loneliness” and a narrative about gay ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev’s escape from Russia in the track “Dancing Star.”
Navigating Modern Perceptions
Tennant has acknowledged the changing landscape of acceptance towards queer culture. He mentioned how mainstream audiences now embrace elements that were once considered taboo, attributing this shift partly to shows like RuPaul’s Drag Race.
Despite concerns about being pigeonholed as a ‘gay band,’ Tennant believes that the mainstreaming of gay culture has made strides. He noted that the resurgence of interest in 80s culture has also helped keep Pet Shop Boys relevant, with their music finding new life in various media.
Staying Timeless
While reflecting on the current state of pop music, Tennant expressed his views on songwriting and the trend of personal narratives dominating lyrics. He emphasized the importance of writing in character and exploring diverse perspectives in songwriting.
