European Championship 2024 Referee Assignments
Stuart Attwell and Anthony Taylor are set to play key roles in this summer’s European Championship in Germany.
VAR and On-Field Referees
Stuart Attwell will be one of the Video Assistant Referees (VARs) at the tournament, while Anthony Taylor will be among the on-field referees.
Recently, both officials were involved in Nottingham Forest’s match against Everton, where the officiating came under scrutiny. Nottingham Forest criticized the decisions made during the game, highlighting three penalties that were not given. They also raised concerns about Attwell’s allegiances, referring to him as “a Luton fan”.
Forest has requested the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) to make public the audio recordings of discussions between Attwell and Taylor regarding the controversial incidents.
Call for Rule Changes
Nottingham Forest has urged PGMOL to reconsider its rules on officials’ allegiances, emphasizing the need to consider contextual rivalries beyond local ones.
Following the match, several Forest members, including manager Nuno Espirito Santo, referee analyst Mark Clattenburg, and player Neco Williams, have been asked by the Football Association to provide their insights. Additionally, the Premier League is investigating the club’s social media post.
Referee Lineup
Aside from Anthony Taylor, the English referee team at the Euros will include Michael Oliver, Gary Beswick, Adam Nunn, Stuart Burt, Dan Cook, and David Coote as the VAR.
