Spain Commits $1 Billion in Military Aid to Ukraine, Signs Bilateral Defense Agreement

Ukraine Receives Military Aid from Spain

As the Russian aggression entered its third year, Ukraine has pleaded for more arms and ammunition for its troops. Spain has stepped up to provide military aid to Ukraine worth 1 billion euros ($1.08 billion) in 2024 under a security deal signed between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez in Madrid.

Details of the Security Deal

  • Spain pledges 1 billion euros in military aid for 2024.
  • The aid will help Ukraine boost its capabilities, including air defense systems.
  • Sanchez emphasizes the importance of protecting Ukrainian civilians, cities, and infrastructure.

Zelensky’s visit coincides with Ukraine’s battle against Russia’s ground offensive in the Kharkiv region, which began on May 10. Sanchez mentioned Spain’s commitment to provide Patriot missiles and the need for systems to launch these missiles to ensure aerial security for Ukraine.

Expanding Support and Collaboration

Sanchez also announced plans to send additional Leopard tanks and ammunition to Ukraine. He expressed a willingness to explore alternative systems to enhance Ukraine’s air security. The security deal covers various aspects, including military, humanitarian, and financial support, collaboration between Spanish and Ukrainian defense industries, as well as assistance with reconstruction and de-mining efforts.

Zelensky has been actively seeking support from allies, having previously signed security agreements with countries like France, Germany, and the UK.
