Slim Down or Showdown!

With the rising rates of obesity in the United Kingdom, there is a need for political leaders to set an example by maintaining a healthy weight. To address this issue, a proposed ‘Fat-free Parliamentary Code’ aims to support MPs, peers, and ministers in leading a healthy lifestyle.

Key Initiatives

Clause 1: Going big for Japan

Following Japan’s success in combating obesity through annual waist measurements, MPs and colleagues will undergo similar measurements. Those with concerning proportions will attend weight-loss coaching sessions to promote healthy eating and exercise.

Clause 2: Rear warnings

Similar to graphic warnings on cigarette packets, food and drink options in parliamentary menus will be labeled with one, two, or three backsides to indicate their healthiness level.

  • One backside: Very healthy option
  • Two backsides: Moderately healthy option
  • Three backsides: Not-so-healthy option

Clause 3: Bar self-assessments

Parliamentarians will complete weekly alcohol self-assessments to monitor their intake. Exceeding recommended units will result in a ban from the bar for three months.

Clause 4: Mandatory gym membership

All MPs and peers will be required to join the parliamentary gym and participate in dance classes to promote physical activity and team building.

Clause 5: The excuse-free declaration

Parliamentarians will sign a declaration affirming their commitment to managing their weight responsibly by controlling food, drink, and portions.

Clause 6: By-election penalty

If MPs fail to take action within one month of their annual waist measurement, a by-election will be called to emphasize the importance of combating obesity.

Conclusion

The ‘Fat-free Parliamentary Code’ not only focuses on weight management but also promotes compassion and self-care among MPs and peers. It encourages a healthy lifestyle and sets a positive example for the nation.
