Shohei Ohtani’s Interpreter Fired Amid Theft Allegations

Los Angeles Dodgers interpreter sacked over gambling allegations

Japanese baseball star Shohei Ohtani’s interpreter and close friend, Ippei Mizuhara (39), has been let go by the Los Angeles Dodgers following reports of illegal gambling and theft from the player.

Allegations and Termination

Interpreter Mizuhara was seen regularly with Ohtani, interpreting for him with the media and at various appearances since Ohtani came to the US in 2017. Mizuhara’s termination came after reports of his alleged ties to an illegal bookmaker surfaced.

Response from the Team

The Los Angeles Dodgers confirmed Mizuhara’s termination in a statement and mentioned that they are aware of the media reports and are gathering information on the matter.

Baseball and Gambling

Sports gambling is illegal in California, and Major League Baseball (MLB) rules prohibit players and team employees from wagering on baseball, even legally. Mizuhara reportedly admitted to betting on international football, the NBA, the NFL, and college football, but denied betting on baseball.

Background and Career

Mizuhara, born in Japan, worked as an interpreter for various baseball teams before joining the Los Angeles Dodgers as Ohtani’s interpreter. He has been a constant companion to Ohtani, assisting him both on and off the field.

Implications and Fallout

The news of Mizuhara’s gambling allegations and subsequent termination has raised concerns within the baseball community. Ohtani, who is currently focusing on his debut with the Dodgers, has not made any public statements regarding the issue.

Global Stardom and Personal Life

Ohtani’s stardom has continued to grow worldwide, with fans eagerly following his career both on and off the field. His recent marriage to Mamiko Tanaka has also garnered attention, showcasing a different side of the usually media-shy player.
