Emilia Perez Premiere Receives Standing Ovation
Emilia Perez, a musical drama starring Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldana, directed by Jacques Audiard, received a lengthy standing ovation following its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. The film features Saldana as Rita, an “overqualified and undervalued” lawyer, who is offered a way out of her corrupt firm by cartel leader Manitas, played by Karla Sofia Gascon. Manitas hires Rita to help him withdraw from his business and realize a long-prepared plan to become the woman of his dreams, with Gomez portraying his unsuspecting wife.
Emotional Response and Ovation
After the debut at the French festival, Audiard and the cast reportedly received an ovation that lasted more than 11 minutes. Videos shared online showed Gomez, Saldana, and Gascon appearing emotional as the audience gave a roaring applause.
Star-Studded Premiere
The star-studded cast walked the red carpet together for the premiere. Gomez wore a black and white gown with an off-the-shoulder neckline, accessorized with an ornate diamond necklace and a slick ponytail. Saldana opted for a black column off-the-shoulder dress adorned with large peach bows, while Gascon chose a black gown with a long sleeve and sweetheart neckline. Venezuelan actor Edgar Ramirez also starred, wearing a white tuxedo jacket.
