IOC Urges Boycott of Russia’s ‘Friendship Games’
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has called for a boycott of Russia’s planned ‘Friendship Games’, denouncing the event as a “cynical attempt” by Russia to politicize sport.
Russia’s Planned Games
Russia is preparing to host the ‘Summer Friendship Games’ in Moscow and Ekaterinburg in September this year, shortly after the Paris Olympics, with a winter event scheduled for Sochi in 2026.
IOC Statement
In a statement, the IOC expressed concern over Russia’s diplomatic efforts to promote the event globally, bypassing sports organizations in target countries. This approach violates the Olympic Charter and international resolutions.
The IOC stated, “It is a cynical attempt by the Russian Federation to politicize sport. The Olympic movement strongly opposes any efforts to politicize sport, especially through politically motivated sports events organized by governments.”
Call for Rejection
The IOC urged all Olympic stakeholders and governments to reject any involvement in events that aim to politicize international sports.
Following Russia’s military actions in Ukraine, the country has been barred from the Olympics. However, Russian athletes who qualify for the Paris 2024 Games can compete under a neutral flag.
