Ruby Wax: Those Ashamed of Mental Health Struggles Are Not Worth Knowing

Ruby Wax on Overcoming Mental Health Stigma

Ruby Wax, the renowned US comedian and actress, has been a vocal advocate for breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health issues. In a recent interview on ITV’s Good Morning Britain, she shared her personal journey and insights on the topic.

Embracing Mental Health Challenges

Wax, who has openly discussed her own struggles with mental health, emphasized the importance of not feeling ashamed of such issues. She highlighted that one’s worth is not defined by their mental health status, stating, “people who are ashamed of their mental health issues are not worth knowing.”

A Journey of Healing

Reflecting on her own experiences, Wax revealed that she had spent time in a mental institution to address unresolved issues in her life. During her treatment, she underwent a unique therapy involving repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (RTMS) to combat depression. This innovative approach, using magnets instead of traditional methods, showed promising results for Wax.

Describing the treatment process, Wax shared how a device resembling a 1950s hairdryer was used to stimulate her brain, offering a non-invasive and effective solution to her mental health challenges.

Spreading Awareness Through Art

In her efforts to raise awareness and destigmatize mental health, Wax has written a book titled “I’m Not As Well As I Thought I Was” and embarked on a tour with the same name. This creative endeavor serves as a tribute to her late friend, the beloved actor Alan Rickman.

Wax expressed her satisfaction in connecting with others who share similar experiences, noting the power of solidarity in overcoming mental health struggles. She encouraged open conversations about mental health, emphasizing the importance of authenticity and vulnerability in addressing such issues.

Through her work and advocacy, Ruby Wax continues to inspire others to confront mental health challenges with courage and compassion.
