Ukrainian Troops Accuse Russia of Chemical Gas Attacks
Ukrainian troops have accused Russia of systematically using internationally outlawed chemical gas attacks on the battlefield. In statements given to the Daily Telegraph, they said Russia regularly uses small drones to drop teargas and other chemicals. The use of such substance, known as CS, is banned under international treaties, primarily the Chemical Weapons Convention.
Frequency of Attacks
According to a top Ukrainian commander, the frequent CS attacks have forced the Ukrainian troops to carry gas masks to the frontlines. A commander of the Ukrainian army on the frontlines in Donetsk Oblast claimed that nearly every position in their area was getting one or two gas grenades dropped on them daily.
Tactics and Impact
The commander stated, “The only way for them to successfully attack us [is] with gas,” emphasizing the fear and panic induced among troops. When gas is detected, the first instinct is to evacuate, leaving troops vulnerable to distant attacks by Russian forces. Ukraine claims Russia has carried out 625 gas-related attacks on their troops since the outbreak of war in 2022.
Challenges Faced by Ukrainian Troops
While most troops now carry gas masks, their effectiveness is limited due to being ex-Soviet models not suitable for modern warfare. President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged the West for urgent support and weapons for a counteroffensive, citing the lack of shells for offensive actions and the need for enhanced defense.
Allegations and Denials
One of the chemical weapons allegedly used by Russia was identified as a K-51 gas grenade by a chemical weapons expert. Russia had also accused Ukraine of using chemical weapons in drones in Russian-occupied eastern Ukraine in 2023, with both sides denying the claims.
