Russia Detains Individuals in Connection to Terror-Related Offenses
Recent developments in Russia have seen the detention of 12 individuals, with eight of them charged with terror-related offenses. Among the detainees are four alleged assailants from Tajikistan.
Alleged Ukrainian Nationalists Connection
A purported evidence suggests that the attack on a Moscow concert hall was orchestrated by “Ukrainian nationalists” who funded the perpetrators through cryptocurrency payments originating from Ukraine. This tragic incident took place on March 22.
Thwarted Attack in Southern Russia
Russian authorities reported detaining three individuals for allegedly planning another attack in the southern part of the country, separate from the earlier incident at Crocus City Hall in suburban Krasnogorsk. This attack claimed nearly 144 lives and was located about 12 miles west of the Kremlin.
Prevented Terrorist Activities
The Federal Security Service (FSB) disclosed that they foiled “terrorist activities of three nationals from a Central Asian country” in connection to the latest thwarted attack. The detained individuals were planning to commit a terrorist act by blowing up a device in a public place in the Stavropol region.
Discovery of Explosive Device Materials
Materials for making an improvised explosive device (IED) were found at the residence of one of the suspects in connection to the thwarted attack. The Stavropol region, located in the southern part of Russia, borders regions like Dagestan and Chechnya.
ISIL Claim and US Warnings
Russia has detained individuals in connection to the attack, with suspicions cast on Ukraine for alleged involvement. ISIL (IS) claimed responsibility for the attack, while the United States issued warnings prior to the assault regarding potential extremist activities targeting mass gatherings in Russia.
