Power Outage in Colorado Affects Over 55,000 to Prevent Wind-Fueled Wildfires

Xcel Energy Initiates Power Shut-Off in Colorado Due to High Wildfire Risks

Xcel Energy, a prominent power company in Colorado, is taking proactive measures to mitigate wildfire risks amidst powerful winds reaching up to 100 miles per hour. The company has announced a power shut-off that will affect over 55,000 people in the region.

Details of the Power Outage

  • The outage will commence at 3:00 PM local time and primarily impact Boulder County, as well as small sections of Broomfield, Douglas, Gilpin, Jefferson, and Larimer counties.
  • Xcel Energy anticipates the power cut-off to last until at least Sunday at noon.
  • The decision to de-energize lines was made proactively to prevent the electric system from being a potential source of wildfire ignition.

Weather Advisory and Safety Precautions

According to the National Weather Service in Boulder, Colorado, winds are expected to intensify, with the strongest gusts forecasted between 6:00 PM on Saturday and 6:00 AM on Sunday. Critical fire weather conditions are predicted across various states, including Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas.

Xcel Energy advises customers who rely on electrical medical equipment to prepare for extended outages. The National Weather Service has also shared safety tips for dealing with high winds:

  • Stay aware of your surroundings and remain indoors if possible.
  • Be cautious of tree limbs snapping quickly and flying debris during peak gusts.
  • Avoid contact with downed power lines and refrain from parking under trees.
  • Avoid unnecessary travel to ensure safety.

Population at Risk

More than 77,000 individuals reside in high fire risk areas, while over 2.9 million people live in critical zones. Residents in regions affected by high winds are advised to avoid activities that could generate sparks and to stay indoors whenever feasible. The forecast indicates potential power outages, tree damage, and dust storms due to the strong winds.
