Paris 2024 Olympic Triathlon Facing Potential Delay or Swimming Leg Cancellation
The Paris 2024 Olympic triathlon may face delays or the cancellation of the swimming leg due to concerns about water quality in the River Seine. Tony Estanguet, the president of the games, has raised the possibility of adverse effects on the event if weather conditions impact the river’s water quality.
Challenges Due to Water Quality Concerns
Despite significant investments totaling over a billion euros to ensure the safety of the river for swimming for the first time in a century, the threat of heavy rain in the French capital could lead to increased levels of E Coli in the water. Samples taken by the Surfrider Foundation Europe charity have already indicated dangerous levels of bacteria in the water, just over a hundred days before the scheduled start of the games.
Contingency Plans and Confidence in the Triathlon Event
Estanguet emphasized the challenges and the proactive measures being taken to address potential issues. He highlighted the ongoing investment and collaboration with authorities to ensure the success of the triathlon event in the Seine. Despite the concerns, he expressed confidence in the ability to proceed with the event, citing contingency plans in place.
- Postponement for Rainy Conditions: The organizers have the option to postpone the event in case of rainy conditions, allowing for a delay of one to three days until suitable conditions prevail.
- Final Decision on Swimming Leg: Estanguet mentioned that if water quality concerns persist, there may be a decision to cancel the swimming leg based on the regulations of the International Federation governing the sport.
While acknowledging the challenges ahead, Estanguet remains optimistic about the successful execution of the triathlon event in the River Seine, emphasizing the importance of legacy and the commitment to overcoming potential obstacles.
