Europe’s Growing Concerns
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine two years ago, EU nations have become increasingly worried about the potential spillover of the conflict into NATO countries. This scenario, however, has been dismissed by the Kremlin.
Polish Prime Minister’s Warning
In a recent interview, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk expressed his belief that Europe is on the brink of a ‘pre-war’ era and emphasized the urgent need for the European Union (EU) to enhance its defense investments. Tusk stated, “I don’t want to scare anyone, but war is no longer a concept from the past. It’s real and it started over two years ago.”
He further added, “The most worrying thing at the moment is that literally any scenario is possible. We haven’t seen a situation like this since 1945. I know it sounds devastating, especially for the younger generation, but we have to get used to the fact that a new era has begun: the pre-war era. I’m not exaggerating; it’s becoming clearer every day.”
Poland’s Heightened Alert
Tusk’s remarks came following a major attack by Russian forces on Ukraine, which briefly breached Polish airspace. This incident led Warsaw to elevate its military readiness to high alert status.
Ukraine reported that Russia’s military offensive was of a large scale and targeted energy infrastructure.
Triumvirate of France, Germany, and Poland
The fears of war escalation have prompted France, Germany, and Poland – known as the “Weimar Triangle” – to increase their military preparedness and defense spending.
Polish PM’s Support for Ukraine
Donald Tusk has been a vocal advocate for Ukraine, using his social media platforms to garner support for the war-torn nation. He emphasized the need for true solidarity with Ukraine through actions rather than just words.
He highlighted the importance of military independence and self-sufficiency for the EU, suggesting that this would make Europe a preferred partner for Washington DC, regardless of the outcome of the upcoming November elections.
