Earthquake Devastation
At least 1,000 homes were destroyed and five people lost their lives when a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.9 struck Papua New Guinea. Emergency relief crews and officials faced challenges as they conducted rescue operations in the affected areas.
Flooding Crisis
The country has been grappling with intense floods, leading to the death of at least 23 people in the interior Highlands region. Villages along the Sepik River were inundated, exacerbating the suffering of residents.
Response and Recovery Efforts
East Sepik Governor Allan Bird reported that around 1,000 homes were lost, emphasizing the urgent need for medical supplies, clean water, and temporary shelters. The Prime Minister approved a US$130 million emergency funding package to support recovery efforts in the aftermath of the disasters.
