Pakistan to Lodge Complaint with Taliban Over Use of Afghan Soil for Terror Attacks

Recent Terrorist Attack on Chinese Engineers in Pakistan

Reports suggest that a network linked to the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) was behind the recent terrorist attack that killed five Chinese engineers in Besham, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

Background

Pakistan has been accused of supporting terrorism in Afghanistan by facilitating proxy routes of jihadist extremism in the region’s Pashtun heartland.

The Attack

Six people, including the Chinese engineers, lost their lives in a suicide attack on March 26. The incident occurred when a convoy transporting the engineers to the Dasu hydroelectric project site was targeted by an explosive-laden vehicle.

Previous Incidents

This was the second attack on Chinese workers at the same hydroelectric project. A similar incident in July 2021 resulted in the deaths of 13 individuals, including nine engineers.

Investigation Details

Authorities in Pakistan have made arrests based on evidence recovered from the suicide bomber, believed to be an Afghan national. The car used in the attack was reportedly smuggled into Pakistan through the Chaman border.

International Implications

If a link to Afghanistan is confirmed in the attack, it could strain relations between China and Afghanistan. China’s unique recognition of Afghanistan’s Taliban rulers by accepting a Taliban-appointed ambassador could be at risk.
