New Zealand’s Ban on Vapes and Increased Penalties
New Zealand has recently announced a ban on vapes and stricter financial penalties for those selling such products to minors. This decision follows the repeal of a unique law previously enacted by the left-leaning administration aimed at phasing out tobacco smoking among young people.
Rationale Behind the Ban
Associate Health Minister Casey Costello emphasized that e-cigarettes are recognized as a crucial tool for smoking cessation. The new regulations are designed to deter minors from initiating smoking habits. Despite the positive impact of vaping on reducing smoking rates, the alarming increase in youth vaping has raised concerns among various stakeholders.
Penalties for Selling to Minors
According to the new laws, retailers found selling vapes to individuals under 18 years old will be subject to fines of up to 100,000 New Zealand dollars (€55,600). Similarly, individuals caught selling vapes to minors will face fines of 1,000 New Zealand dollars.
Additional Regulations
In addition to increased penalties, the regulations also prohibit the sale of e-cigarettes featuring images that may appeal to young people or those with enticing names. These measures aim to further discourage youth from engaging in vaping.
