Most Expensive Feather Auctioned in New Zealand

Rare Huia Feather Sold at Record Price

A rare and highly sought-after feather from the extinct huia bird of New Zealand was recently sold at an auction for a staggering amount, making it the world’s most expensive feather.

About the Auction

  • The feather was estimated to fetch between $2,000-$3,000 but sold for NZD$46,521 ($28,365).
  • The huia bird, endemic to the North Island of New Zealand, was last seen in the early 1900s.
  • The feather’s excellent condition and historical significance contributed to its high value.

Significance of the Huia Bird

The huia bird, known for its beautiful song, was considered sacred by the Māoris and was a symbol of prestige. Unfortunately, the European demand for their feathers led to the bird’s extinction.

The last confirmed sighting of the huia bird was in 1907, marking the end of a species that held cultural significance in New Zealand.

Feather’s Value Comparison

The nine-gram huia feather was valued at $5,169 per gram, surpassing the value of gold at the time of the auction.

The feather’s sale highlights the ongoing interest in preserving rare and culturally significant artifacts like the huia feather.

All buyers of the feather needed a permit from New Zealand’s Ministry for Culture and Heritage, underscoring its national importance and protection status.
