Michail Antonio believes officials were biased against West Ham following European exit

Michail Antonio reflects on West Ham’s Europa League exit

West Ham’s Michail Antonio expressed frustration after his team’s exit from the Europa League against Bayer Leverkusen. Despite Antonio’s early goal giving hope to the Hammers, they were unable to overcome the first-leg deficit.

Playing against the odds

Antonio felt that the officiating during the match was not in their favor, stating, “It doesn’t feel like you’re playing against 11 men, it feels like you’re playing against 13 or 14 including the two linos.”

Despite the challenges, Antonio emphasized the importance of staying focused and professional throughout the game.

Valiant effort falls short

West Ham fought bravely for a second goal to force extra time, but a late goal from Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong sealed their fate. Antonio acknowledged the team’s pride in their achievements despite the disappointing result.

Controversial officiating

The match saw multiple bookings and a touchline altercation that led to a red card for West Ham’s coach and a member of Leverkusen’s staff. Manager David Moyes refrained from commenting on the officiating but praised his team’s performance.

Alonso’s perspective

Leverkusen’s manager, Xabi Alonso, admitted that his team struggled in the first half but showed character in the second half. He acknowledged the intensity brought by West Ham and the impact of their substitutes.

Overall, the match was a testament to the competitive nature of European football, with both teams giving their all until the final whistle.
