Meta Introduces New Safety Features to Combat “Sextortion” and Intimate Image Abuse
Meta has announced the rollout of several new safety features aimed at protecting users, especially young individuals, from the dangers of “sextortion” and intimate image exploitation.
Nudity Protection Feature on Instagram
As part of these efforts, the social media conglomerate, which includes Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, will be testing a new feature called Nudity Protection in Direct Messages (DMs) on Instagram. This feature will automatically blur images containing nudity and will be enabled by default for users under 18, providing a safer online environment.
- Images with nudity will be blurred in DMs for users under 18
- Users will receive a message discouraging them from responding to such images
- Option to block the sender and report the chat will be available
Moreover, individuals sending images with nudity will be reminded to exercise caution, and they will have the option to retract such images.
Efforts Against Sextortion and Scams
Meta emphasized its commitment to combating financial sextortion and other forms of online abuse. The company has been collaborating with experts to develop tools and strategies to prevent these crimes.
- Testing new detection technology to identify suspicious accounts
- Limiting interactions with potential scammers, especially targeting younger users
- Routing message requests from suspicious accounts to a hidden folder
- Restricting messaging capabilities for suspicious accounts targeting young users
Additionally, Meta is expanding its cooperation with other platforms through the Lantern programme to share information about accounts and behaviors that violate child safety policies. This collective effort aims to combat sextortion scams across various online platforms and enhance user protection.
By implementing these measures, Meta seeks to create a safer online space and empower users, particularly young individuals, to recognize and guard against online threats.
