Melanoma Surge: Testing New Personalized Skin Cancer Vaccine

The World’s First Personalised mRNA Cancer Jab for Melanoma

The world’s first personalised mRNA cancer jab for melanoma is currently being tested in British patients. This innovative jab, custom-built for each individual in just a few weeks, shows promising potential not only in treating melanoma but also in combating lung, bladder, and kidney cancers. The jab works by signaling the body to target and eliminate cancer cells, thereby reducing the risk of recurrence.

Understanding Melanoma

Melanoma originates in melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color and offers protection against UV radiation. The disease occurs when abnormal cells begin to proliferate uncontrollably. Key symptoms of melanoma include the appearance of new abnormal moles and changes in existing moles.

  • A – Asymmetrical: Does the mole have an uneven shape?
  • B – Border: Are the edges blurry or jagged?
  • C – Colour: Is the mole uneven in color with different shades and tones?
  • D – Diameter: Is the mole larger than others?
  • E – Evolving: Is the mole changing, such as itching, bleeding, or becoming crusty?

While these changes do not always indicate cancer, it is essential to have any unusual or evolving moles examined by a healthcare professional.

Factors Contributing to the Rise of Melanoma

Dr. Susan Mayou, a consultant dermatologist, notes an increase in melanoma cases, partly attributed to heightened public health awareness. Factors such as increased sun exposure, particularly due to rising temperatures and hotter summers, are believed to contribute to the growing rates of melanoma.

Risk Factors and Prevention

Several factors can elevate an individual’s risk of melanoma, including genetic predisposition, skin type, past sun exposure, and the use of sunbeds. Protecting the skin from sun damage is crucial in preventing melanoma. Recommendations include staying in the shade on sunny days, wearing protective clothing, applying sunscreen with at least SPF 30 (preferably SPF 50), and monitoring moles for any changes.

Remember, there is no safe tan, except the one from a bottle. Take care of your skin and seek medical advice if you notice any concerning changes in your moles.
