Man Accused of Racially Abusing Ugo Monye
A 31-year-old man is set to appear in court after being accused of racially abusing former England rugby international Ugo Monye.
Details of the Case
Devon and Cornwall Police have confirmed that Angus Beukes has been summonsed to appear at Exeter Magistrates’ Court on July 24th. He is facing a charge of causing racially aggravated harassment, alarm, or distress.
Incident at Sandy Park Stadium
The charge stems from an alleged incident that took place at Exeter Chiefs’ Sandy Park stadium following their victory against Gloucester in November last year.
Exeter Chiefs issued an apology to Ugo Monye, who is now a pundit after his rugby career with Harlequins. The incident was captured on CCTV and reported to the Devon and Cornwall Police.
Court Proceedings
A spokesperson for the police stated, “Angus Beukes, aged 31, will be charged with racially/religiously aggravated harassment, alarm, or distress by words/writing at the court hearing on July 24, 2024. The incident occurred on November 19, 2023, at Sandy Park Way, Exeter.”
The police emphasized the importance of respecting the court process and urged the public not to engage in speculation on social media that could prejudice the proceedings.
