Man Rescued from Underground Drainage in Brisbane
An Australian man in his 30s was freed from an underground drainage on Monday after being trapped inside for 36 hours. The incident took place on Castlebar Street in Brisbane.
Rescue Operation
He was released with the help of the firefighting unit of the area of Kangaroo Point stormwater drain at about 11:00 local time on March 25. He had entered the drain on Saturday while trying to retrieve his phone, according to rescue authorities.
Rescue Process
Local media reported that the man attempted to find an exit but couldn’t wade himself out of the drain water. He had declined rescue offers over the weekend but eventually called for help on Monday.
James Lingwood, a passerby who alerted the authorities, described hearing the man’s voice on Sunday and offering assistance.
The Queensland Fire and Emergency Services quickly rescued the man by lifting the drain lid, allowing him to climb out within five minutes.
Acting police commissioner, Steve Gollschewski, mentioned that an investigation has been launched into the incident, expressing surprise at people’s behavior in such situations.
Warning from Local Council
Earlier, the local council had warned people to stay away from storm water drains, pipes, and manholes, emphasizing the potential danger of being trapped in such areas.
Medical Treatment
After being rescued, the man was taken to Mater Hospital for treatment of abrasions and hypothermia.
