Leo Varadkar Announces Resignation as Prime Minister

Indian-origin Leo Varadkar announced his decision to step down as the prime minister of Ireland and the leader of the governing Fine Gael party citing “personal and political” reasons.

Varadkar’s Leadership and Decision

Leo Varadkar, who has been serving as the prime minister since December 2022, revealed his resignation plan to the coalition members during a regular weekly meeting. He expressed that leading the nation has been the most fulfilling time of his life.

Transition of Power

Varadkar stated that he will resign as the president and leader of Fine Gael immediately and as the Taoiseach once his successor assumes office. He emphasized the importance of a new leader to navigate the coalition government’s re-election.

Successor and Future Leadership

Varadkar called for the election of a new party leader before the upcoming Fine Gael conference, with the parliament subsequently voting on the new leader as the prime minister. Potential contenders for the Fine Gael leadership role include Simon Harris, Simon Coveney, Paschal Donohoe, and Helen McEntee.

Future Plans and Gratitude

Reflecting on his tenure, Varadkar expressed gratitude for the opportunities to serve as Taoiseach, leader, and cabinet member since 2011. He acknowledged the learning experiences and interactions with diverse individuals both domestically and internationally.

Green Party leader Eamon Ryan affirmed his party’s commitment to collaborate with Varadkar’s successor, highlighting a smooth transition within the coalition government.
