Kenya Makes History with First Female Air Force Commander
Kenya has achieved a significant milestone by appointing Maj Gen Fatuma Gaiti Ahmed as the first female commander of the air force. This historic decision marks a step forward in gender equality and representation within the country’s armed forces.
Background of Maj Gen Fatuma Gaiti Ahmed
- Gen Ahmed was born in 1965 and attended Aga Khan High School in Nairobi.
- She completed her studies at the National Defence College and Defence Staff College in July 2000.
- Gen Ahmed holds a Diploma in Management from Strathmore University College.
Career Progression
After responding to a recruitment ad by the Kenyan Defence Forces in 1983, Gen Ahmed embarked on her military career. She joined the Kenya Military Academy as an officer cadet in 1984 and quickly rose through the ranks.
In 1985, she was appointed as a second lieutenant in the Kenyan Women’s Service Corps, becoming the first woman in Kenyan military history to advance in rank.
Following the disbandment of the Women’s Corps in 1999, Gen Ahmed transitioned to the Kenyan Air Force, where she continued to excel.
Her dedication and leadership qualities were recognized when she was promoted to the rank of Brigadier by President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2015 and later to Major General in 2021.

In 2023, President William Ruto appointed Gen Ahmed as the Senior Directing Staff Air, highlighting her exceptional career and contributions to the military.
