Overview of Donald Trump’s Trial
The judge overseeing Donald Trump’s trial regarding purported hush money payments to a porn star in New York has imposed a partial gag order on the former US president.
Judge’s Gag Order
On Tuesday (Mar 26), Judge Juan Merchan instructed Trump to refrain from publicly criticising potential witnesses, prosecutors, court personnel, their relatives, or potential jurors. This action came after Trump’s criticism of the judge and his daughter on Truth Social.
Trump’s Response
Trump described Merchan as a “true and certified Trump hater” suffering from “Trump Derangement Syndrome.” He called for Merchan to recuse himself, citing bias due to his daughter’s affiliation with a liberal Democratic firm.
Previous Gag Orders
Merchan is the third judge overseeing a case involving Trump to implement a partial gag order. Judges Arthur Engoron and Tanya Chutkan also enforced similar orders in separate cases against Trump.
Judge’s Ruling
Judge Merchan highlighted Trump’s history of making “threatening, inflammatory, denigrating” public statements. He stated that Trump’s remarks posed a risk to justice administration, leading to the imposition of the gag order.
Upcoming Trial
Merchan has set April 15 as the start date for Trump’s criminal trial, where he faces charges related to falsifying business records, election interference, and retaining classified documents.
