White House Pets Through History
The White House has a rich tradition of presidential pets, with each animal bringing its own unique story to the iconic residence.
Literary Cats in the White House
While cats have been a rarity in the White House, they have often embarked on literary adventures. Notably, both Hillary Clinton and Barbara Bush penned books about their feline companions.
Willow: The First Feline
First Lady Jill Biden has authored a children’s storybook centered around Willow, the short-haired tabby who now calls the White House home. The book chronicles Willow’s journey from a farm in Pennsylvania to the White House in 2022.
Set to be released in June, “Willow the White House Cat” offers a unique perspective on the ‘People’s House’ as seen through the eyes of a curious feline explorer.
Jill Biden, in a statement released by publisher Simon and Schuster, shared that Willow’s adventures in the White House introduce her to the remarkable individuals who keep the residence running smoothly, offering readers a delightful glimpse into the heart of America’s most famous address.
From Dogs to Cats
Following the departure of Bidens’ dogs due to behavioral issues, Willow stands as the sole presidential pet at the White House. German Shepherds Commander and Major were relocated after incidents of biting, while Champ, the Bidens’ cherished dog, passed away in 2021.
Willow, known as the ‘First Feline,’ marks the return of a cat to the White House since India, the pet of President George W. Bush and the First Lady. Sharing roots with Jill Biden’s home state of Pennsylvania, Willow draws her name from Willow Grove, adding a personal touch to her White House residency.
Co-authored by Jill Biden and Akyssa Satin Capucilli, with illustrations by artist Kate Berube, the book promises to enchant readers with Willow’s charming escapades in the historic halls of the White House.
A Presidential Legacy
The presence of pets in the White House has been a longstanding tradition, with each animal leaving a mark on history. While cats have been a rare sight, their literary contributions have added a touch of whimsy to the presidential abode.
Notably, Hillary Clinton and Barbara Bush’s books immortalize their furry companions, highlighting the special bond between presidents and their pets. In contrast, Donald Trump’s tenure marked a departure from this tradition, being the first president since Andrew Jackson not to have any pets.
