Japan to Resume Funding to UN Palestinian Refugee Agency
Japan announced on Tuesday that it will lift its suspension of funding to the UN Palestinian refugee agency (UNRWA) following an investigation into allegations involving some staff members in attacks on Israel. This decision comes as part of efforts to rebuild trust and support the agency’s crucial role in addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Background
Earlier this year, Tokyo, along with 15 other countries, suspended approximately $450 million in funding to UNRWA pending the investigation into the allegations. This move significantly impacted the agency’s operations in the Gaza Strip, which has been facing challenges due to the conflict.
Recent Developments
Several countries, including Australia and Canada, have already reinstated their funding to UNRWA, recognizing its importance in providing relief in Gaza. Japan’s decision to resume financial contributions highlights its commitment to supporting humanitarian efforts in the region.
Foreign Minister’s Statement
Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa, following a meeting with UNRWA head Philippe Lazzarini in Tokyo, emphasized the agency’s essential role in managing the crisis in Gaza. She stated that Japan would lift the moratorium on its financial contributions and provide assistance while ensuring the appropriate use of funds.
Yoko Kamikawa mentioned that approximately $35 million of the initially planned funding was ready to be disbursed, reaffirming Japan’s position as the sixth largest donor to UNRWA based on the organization’s 2022 data.
