Istanbul’s Historic Trams to be Replaced
Istanbul’s famous red and white trams, cherished by both locals and tourists for over a century, are set to make way for modern streetcars. These iconic trams have long been a symbol of Istiklal Avenue, the bustling shopping street that spans 1.4 kilometers on Istanbul’s European side.
A Glimpse into History
First introduced in 1914, these original trams have been meticulously maintained and updated over the years to preserve their historical allure. Despite the upgrades, they have managed to retain their vintage charm.
Modern Upgrades with a Nostalgic Touch
The new battery-powered trams are designed to pay homage to their predecessors, featuring wooden floors and reversible seats. Instead of traditional rear-view mirrors, these trams boast two cameras on each side, offering improved visibility for drivers.
“It’s a very good thing that they are modernizing the tram. The new one hasn’t changed the nostalgic aspect of the old one,” a local resident shared with AFP.
Transition and Innovation
Istanbul’s mayoral office has announced plans to retire the old trams and house them in a transport museum currently in development. Meanwhile, the new streetcar will operate alongside the century-old trams during its testing phase.
Ali Tugrul Kucukalioglu, Istanbul’s director of electric transport, emphasized the energy efficiency of the new trams, noting that they can “run for two days on a single battery.” This advancement will allow the removal of overhead power lines on Istiklal Avenue, which have historically posed issues during national holidays.
One notable change in the new trams is the absence of external sidebars, a feature passengers often used while traversing Istiklal Avenue.
Preserving Tradition in a Modern Setting
Istiklal Avenue, formerly known as the Grand Avenue of Pera, holds a significant place in Istanbul’s history. Despite the changes over the years, it remains a popular spot for tourists, especially those who relish the experience of riding the historic trams to Taksim Square.
