Israel Assumes ‘Operational Control’ of Key Egypt-Gaza Passage

Israeli Forces Gain Control Over Philadelphi Corridor

The Israeli army recently announced that it had gained “operational control” over the strategic Philadelphi corridor along the border between the Gaza Strip and Egypt. This development comes amidst ongoing military operations in the region.

Background

  • The seizure of the corridor follows Israeli forces taking control of Egypt’s Rafah border crossing on May 7.
  • The corridor, spanning 14 kilometers, was previously operated as a buffer zone between Gaza and Egypt.
  • Israeli troops had patrolled the corridor until 2005 when they were withdrawn as part of a larger disengagement from the Gaza Strip.

Current Situation

Israel’s offensive assault on Gaza’s southern region continues as the humanitarian situation in the Strip worsens. The military official, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that Israel has now established operational control over the corridor.

A top Israeli security official has indicated that the conflict with Hamas in Gaza may persist until the end of the year. The objective is to dismantle Hamas’s power and military capabilities.

Future Plans

The Israeli National Security Adviser, Tzachi Hanegbi, emphasized the goal of eliminating threats from Gaza, including Iranian-backed militant groups. Discussions are underway regarding Gaza’s post-war future, with a focus on Palestinian self-governance and Israeli security.

It is important to note that ongoing developments in the Israel-Palestine conflict are being closely monitored. While efforts are made to report accurately, the authenticity of all information cannot always be independently verified.
