Release of an Indian Crew Member
One of the Indians aboard the MSC Aries, a woman named Ann Tessa Joseph, was freed and safely returned home on April 18.
Consular Access and Expected Release
Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian stated that the crew of the seized Portuguese-flagged ship, which included Indians and was linked to Israel, has been granted consular access. The crew is expected to be freed, as reported by Reuters citing Iranian media.
Reason for Seizure
Iran’s foreign ministry mentioned that the Aries was seized for “violating maritime laws” and indicated a connection to Israel. The seizure occurred days after Tehran’s response to a suspected Israeli strike on its consulate in Damascus.
Humanitarian Concerns and Diplomatic Efforts
Amirabdollahian emphasized the humanitarian issue of the crew’s release during discussions with the Portuguese counterpart. The crew is to be handed over to their ambassadors in Tehran, with the timing of the release yet to be determined.
Indian Crew’s Health and Well-being
The Indian foreign ministry confirmed that the 16 remaining Indian crew members aboard the Aries are in good health and have been in constant communication with their families. Consular access was provided, ensuring their well-being and addressing any concerns onboard the vessel.
