India’s Support for the Philippines
India’s External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr. S Jaishankar, during a visit to Manila, reiterated India’s unwavering support for the Philippines in upholding its national sovereignty. This support comes in the midst of escalating tensions in the South China Sea.
Maritime Deployments and Cooperation
Jaishankar outlined India’s maritime deployments in the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea to counter threats, emphasizing the Indian Navy’s role in operations to rescue nationals of various countries, including the Philippines.
Adherence to UNCLOS
Emphasizing the importance of adhering to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), Jaishankar highlighted the significance of a rules-based order for the progress and prosperity of the region. He stressed the need for all parties to adhere to UNCLOS 1982 in its entirety.
Support for Philippines’ Claims
The South China Sea Arbitration of 2016, which ruled in favor of the Philippines against China, serves as a legal framework reinforcing the Philippines’ claims over Ayungin Shoal and clarifying maritime entitlements in the region.
Cooperation for a Multipolar Asia
Advocating for a multipolar Asia, Jaishankar called for closer cooperation between India and the Philippines in shaping the emerging global order. Discussions between the two nations covered various issues, including the United Nations, the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), the Indo-Pacific, Myanmar, and Ukraine.
Jaishankar’s visit to the Philippines is part of a three-country tour, which also includes Singapore and Malaysia.
