Escalation of Gang Violence in Haiti
Gunmen launched a brazen assault on two affluent neighborhoods in the capital of Haiti, shattering the relative peace that had prevailed in the areas despite a surge in gang activity across Port-au-Prince.
Violent Assault on Communities
- Residents forced to flee homes as assailants ransacked properties
- Desperate pleas for help flooded radio stations as terrified civilians sought refuge
- At least a dozen people reportedly died in the violence
The grim aftermath of the assault was evident in nearby Pétion-Ville, where bodies of at least twelve individuals lay strewn.
Continued Violence and Unrest
Despite Prime Minister Ariel Henry announcing his resignation, gang violence persists unabated. Gangs, emboldened by the power vacuum, continue their campaign of terror, defying calls for peace and stability.
Situation in Port-au-Prince
The capital remains paralyzed with streets engulfed in flames of unrest and uncertainty. Recent attacks, including a devastating fire at the main prison and a targeted assault on the residence of the national police chief, have plunged Haiti deeper into turmoil.
Government Response
Haiti’s government has imposed a nighttime curfew extension in a bid to stem the tide of violence. However, gang violence persists with the destruction of critical infrastructure and delays in the deployment of a UN-backed police force from Kenya.
Humanitarian Crisis
Since January 2023, over 5,000 people have been displaced and 2,439 have died in Haiti. The first nine months of 2023 saw over 5,600 gang-related incidents, including 3,156 killings and 1,248 kidnappings.
