Ministers Delay Plans to Ban No-Fault Evictions
Ministers appear to have delayed their own plans to ban no-fault evictions, as the landmark Renters’ Reform Bill has been watered down.
Amendments to the Legislation
- A plan for an assessment on “readiness of the courts” before section 21 will be abolished for existing tenancies.
- A new amendment will prevent tenants from ending a tenancy within the first six months.
In a letter to Tory MPs, levelling up minister Jacob Young outlined these amendments and changes to bolster landlord protections.
Reaction and Criticism
Labour’s shadow housing minister Matthew Pennycook criticized the delay, stating that private renters have every right to be furious at the watering down of protections promised by the Tories.
Tom Darling, campaign manager at the Renters’ Reform Coalition, accused the Government of “selling renters down the river” and described the legislation as becoming a Landlords’ charter.
