Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni Enters EU Election Race
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has announced her participation in the upcoming European Union (EU) elections scheduled for June this year. Despite running for a seat, she has stated that she will not assume the position if elected. The elections are set to take place from June 6-9 and are seen as a crucial test for her 18-month-old leadership.
Meloni’s Campaign Strategy
During a party conference in Pescara, Meloni outlined her strategy to garner support for her Brothers of Italy party in the EU elections. She aims to replicate the success of her party in Italy by forming a coalition of center-right forces to challenge the left-wing opposition.
Meloni’s Stance on the EU
Known for her right-wing views, Meloni has been a vocal critic of the European Union. In her 2022 election campaign, she even proposed leaving the Euro Zone, causing concern in European capitals. However, since assuming power, Meloni has adopted a more diplomatic approach, aligning with the EU on certain issues like the situation in Ukraine.
Key Contenders in the EU Elections
Aside from Meloni, other prominent leaders vying for seats in the EU elections include Elly Schlein of the Opposition Democratic Party (PD) and Antonio Tajani from Forza Italia. Recent polls indicate that Meloni’s Brothers of Italy is the most favored party in the country, with 27% support, followed by the PD at 20% and the left-leaning 5-Star Movement at 16%.
If elected, Meloni, Schlein, and Tajani have pledged to step down to make way for runner-up candidates, as per current electoral practices.
