Israeli Forces Take Control of Hospitals in Gaza Amid Conflict
In the midst of the ongoing conflict in Gaza, healthcare facilities in the region are facing significant challenges, with around 2 million civilians seeking shelter in partially operational hospitals due to logistical issues and military actions by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF).
Israeli Forces’ Actions
- Israeli forces seized control of two additional hospitals in Gaza on Sunday, alleging that these facilities were being used by Hamas operatives for terror activities.
- The Palestinian Red Crescent reported that medical staff were targeted by heavy gunfire during Israel’s offensive, resulting in the death of at least one staff member.
- Claims were made that Israeli tanks entered areas surrounding Al-Amal and Nasser hospitals in Khan Younis, demanding the evacuation of staff, patients, and refugees while deploying smoke bombs to force them out.
Israel’s Justification
Israel defended its actions by citing “precise intelligence” indicating terrorist use of civilian infrastructure in the Al-Amal area. The IDF had previously taken control of Al Shifa Hospital, Gaza’s main healthcare facility, where they reported eliminating over 170 gunmen, with casualties among patients as well.
“Hamas and Islamic Jihad terrorists are reportedly seeking refuge within Shifa hospital wards,” stated Israeli military spokesperson, Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari.
Hamas Denial
Hamas has vehemently denied these allegations, accusing Israeli soldiers of freely moving within the hospital complex and interrogating displaced persons, patients, and the wounded.
Healthcare Facilities as Refugee Shelters
With healthcare facilities strained by both logistical challenges and military actions, an estimated 2 million civilians, representing 80% of Gaza’s population, have sought shelter in these partially operational hospitals, underscoring the immense displacement caused by the conflict.
Gaza’s health ministry reported a significant toll on civilians, with over 32,000 Palestinians killed and 74,000 injured since Israel’s offensive began on Oct. 7.
