Gantz’s Centrist Party Submits Bill to Dissolve Israeli Parliament, Netanyahu’s Power at Risk

Israeli Parliament Dissolution Bill Submitted

Israeli war cabinet minister Benny Gantz’s centrist party has submitted a bill seeking to dissolve the parliament and call for an early election. This move is seen as an attempt to topple Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government.

Details of the Bill Submission

  • The head of the National Union Party, Pnina Tamano-Shata, presented the bill to dissolve the 25th Knesset.
  • The bill follows the request of party leader Minister Benny Gantz to proceed towards an election before October.

Reactions to the Bill

Netanyahu’s right-wing Likud party criticized the move, stating that it would be detrimental to the fight against Hamas in Gaza. They viewed it as a reward to Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar and a capitulation to international pressure.

Gantz’s Ultimatum to Netanyahu

Earlier this month, Benny Gantz set a deadline of June 8 for Netanyahu to finalize a plan of action to achieve six key strategic goals related to the Gaza war. These goals include bringing home hostages, demilitarizing Gaza, and establishing Israeli security control in the region.

Previous Statements and Criticisms

  • In April, Gantz had suggested going to elections in September.
  • Defence Minister Yoav Gallant criticized Netanyahu for not ruling out an Israeli occupation of Gaza post-war.
